Recently we hosted a talk given by Dr. Daryn Peterson who manufactures the Mega Multi 100; the worlds first USDA certified 100% organic whole food multivitamin. He pointed out in his presentation that our cells need proper nutrients in order to return to their healthy state. But chemicals, now found everywhere in our environment, cause our cells to become less efficient at nutrient uptake as well as waste removal. This creates a toxic environment in our bodies and can lead to disease.

Today, there are many chemicals that have been granted “generally regarded as safe” (GRAS) status by the FDA that are in our foods, drinks, health products, cleaning products, etc. Each of these GRAS products have been studied and determined that they are “generally” not a health risk if they are consumed in minute amounts. What has not been studied are the effects of these chemicals in the combinations and amounts that the American public is consuming. If minute amounts are in the food we eat during the day, the soaps and cleaners we use, the drinks we consume, and the vitamins and medicines we are taking, are we really consuming “trace amounts”? I believe the answer in no! I also believe that we should never be consuming chemicals in any form.

Some of the most common chemicals that we consume, which is found in many products from food to drinks to vitamins to medicines, fall under a category called Excipients.

Excipients are non-nutrient substances used to ease the manufacturing process.

That’s why they are in our products. They are used as machine lubricants! They don’t belong in our food for any reason. But don’t worry, they tell us, they are “generally regarded as safe”.

The worst excipients are flowing and anti-caking agents like magnesium stearate, maltodextrin (sugar), sodium caseinate (milk), silicon dioxide (sand/glass) and talcum powder (illegal in most countries) used to simplify flowing small grained/powdered material into containers.

Magnesium stearate is one of the most common and has been linked to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

The bottom line is that we live in a world where cases of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes are on the rise. For us to transform our bodies from sickness to health, we must focus our efforts on proper nutrition, exercise, supplementation, and lifestyle. Only then can we win the battle against disease.

One simply cannot get the nutrients the body needs if chemicals are constantly being introduced. If you are eating anything with an excipient in it, stop. Consider all of the alternatives, and try to make informed decisions. The best way to avoid chemicals is to consume products that are USDA certified 100% organic. If the label does not say USDA 100% organic, it has chemicals.

Reading labels and finding these chemicals can be tricky, but there are some general guidelines to follow to avoid or reduce the amount of chemical consumption. Start with the front of the label. If the product you are consuming reads USDA 100% organic, it is chemical free. All others break down as follows:

  • Organic – The FDA requires all products with this certification to be 95% organic. 5% can be chemicals.
  • Made With Organic Ingredients – Products with this on the label must be 70% organic and 30% can be chemicals.
  • All Natural Ingredients – Lowest level of USDA certification. Products with this on the label must have ingredients with no food additives. This would fall under the preservative category, but excipients are totally ok here.
  • Natural – These products are completely unregulated. Anything goes.
  • Nothing – The worst of the worst.
